Can I Color My Hair Extensions Grey?

Can I Color My Hair Extensions Grey?

Can I Color My Hair Extensions? By Jaclynn Kate

I'm asked all the time from my clients & other stylists clients if they are able to 'dye' their hair extensions. Well, in all honesty it depends on the kind of extension and where you are going to try and take the color. I personally have had 'WHITE' hair extensions and colored them to nearly a black. ( I was going through a phase haha)

With that being said, the brand that I use on myself & on my clients says on it's website that you are able to color them being that they are 100% human remy extensions. You can NOT bleach them though. If bleach gets on them they can & probably will break.

Now another question I am asked is, 'what about if I get these extensions & I bleach my roots'? See a stylist. Even if you are a stylist yourself you don't want to risk over lapping bleach on your new extensions & having them break. It's not work the hassle or the money invested. You just have to be careful with the application is all.

Onto my inspiration for my blog. My client below is someone I've known from hair school. Normally doing another stylist hair is actually really frustrating, however in this case given the project it was so nice to have a stylist in my chair who understood the process.

This is actually her second sitting in my chair. She was in a few days earlier with the request for a very cool blonde/grey tones in her hair. Right now the grey hair color is extremely trendy while it can also be very tricky to get. So we did some low lights in her hair and toned it down a bit but clearly was still on the warmer side.

So she came back in for another toning & the decision to add in 100 pieces of extensions to her hair. Her hair is SUPER thin, but she has a lot of it so it will hide the beads on the extensions.

And her after photo is as cool as I could get it. First toning her with 09b/09v/9t and clear. Didn't even move the color.  Then I went back in with straight 09v... not much of anything happened.

So I remixed 06t and a cap of 09b and was very happy with the results. Hence why I was happy a stylist was in my chair. I feel like almost anyone else would't have understood the process. Nonetheless she was very happy with the results of her hair & the extensions blended very nice!

Long Brunette Hair Extensions in Rhode Island

Long Brunette Hair Extensions in Rhode Island  By Jaclynn Kate

With wedding season in full motion I have sadly been slacking on blogging about what's happening in the salon. With that being said I have SO many fun blogs to catch up on & deliver you with!! If you follow my salon blog, my wedding blog & my blog about myself personally, you know I am clearly obsessed with hair, makeup & having fun living life. I feel as though my love for what I do attracts my clients from all over & they really enjoy their time in my chair, and are high on life when they leave with their new do!
Moving forward, I want to introduce my client Genie to you. Genie lives out in Mass and drove 2.5 hours to come sit in my chair for her hair transformation. Her hair is on the thinner side and is quite curly in texture. Unfortunately like most girls Genie hate's her curly hair & tends to straighten it 9 times out of ten. Possibly causing damage being she doesn't use a leave in conditioner/protector and it tends not grow the way she likes.
In the first photo here you can see I have blown her hair out to start the application process.

We decided to apply 80 pieces of hair extensions to her hair. Just so she can have the additional volume she was looking for. Second photo is how the extensions look right after the application & the third photo is how they look after being washed & styled for the night!

As always, I tend to check in with my first time hair extension clients to make sure they're happy with their investment. Happy clients are the best clients !!

Blonde Remy Hair Extensions in RI

Blonde Remy Hair Extensions in RI
Before & After Blonde Hair Extensions in RI

Blonde Hair Extensions North Kingstown RI

Blonde Remy Hair Extensions in RI By Jaclynn Kate

I blog now once a week about what extensions were done in the salon in the week prior. Since doing this & using my blogs as more of a teaching aid for my clients, I have gained a significantly larger clientele. I meet new people every week with different likes & dislikes about their hair & different reasons they want/need extensions. Every week I tell them I understand, & every week they look at me puzzled like 'how can you understand, you have nice hair'?
Well I can understand cause just like you, my hair doesn't grow past a certain length & that's why I wear extensions. Unfortunately my hair grows a bit past my shoulders & then stops. Reason being, I go from brunette to blonde & back to brunette & back to blonde SO much that it kills my hair & doesn't allow it go grow any more. Yes, I know this is bad for my hair- I'm a hair stylist for Gods sakes, I should do better lol. I have been doing this for YEARS! When I was in High School I'd do it with box color from CVS & call my hair dresser asking to make me blonde again & never understood how annoying I must have been to her!! LOL
I am now trying to break my hair killing cycle by going a bit more natural of a blonde & using hair extensions to give me the different dimensional colors I am always looking for.
Last week I took out all my extensions, assessed my hair, went darker, got a hair cut & did a restyle. Here's my process.
Here's my head with NO extensions! Literally JUST took them out. My complaint to my employee/ very talented stylist is, it's too brassy, boring, and I need something a bit different but not too much upkeep with bleach. Oh & I need a hair cut!!! If you can see to the right of the photo I am growing out a bad hair cut still! Friend of mine wasn't paying attention & cut my hair lop sided- OOPS! lol it's okay - just another reason for the extensions.

Back to my color, Carly & I decided to bring my root down to a level 7, which is my natural blonde color & then take some of the 7 & put it throughout the rest of the head like a low light. Then with my overly bleached blonde hair, we were going to take it down to a 9GB & tone my previous extensions to a 9GB.

Here's the AFTER look!! So we had to tone the extensions twice. They are overly annoying when you are trying to color them because they soak up so much of the color that to my eye it looks uneven endless I tone twice. This look gave me a very suttle balayage look. The top is darker with some pieces going through it darker all down to the bottom where it's the lighter blonde.

A service like this took up two days to complete. We started with the base color/lowlight the first day & toning the extensions down. Then the next day putting the extensions in & styling. Over all I'm happy with the color & if I want to go darker I'll just throw some low light extensions in.

Before & after Brunette Hair Extensions 18 inches

Before & after Brunette Hair Extensions in RI

How long do these extensions come?

Before & after looks at Brunette Extensions

Brunette Extensions in RI

Before & after Brunette Hair Extensions 18 inches By Jaclynn Kate

Since my last post of the Ombre hair extensions, the salon had been super busy with brunettes! It's the perfect time of year to get extensions. Tax season is upon us & taking care of the first initial cost for most clients who have been dying for long hair. A lot of times we get brunettes in the salon & never give them one solid color of extension. The reason being, we like to add more dimension to the hair. Also 9 times out of ten, when someone colors their hair, it's not all the same exact color. So to keep the look natural, we add in a few different shades of extensions.

Meet my client Kristin.

Kristin found me from one of my posts online & came in for a complimentary consultation. While doing the consultation, I explained to her she would need more then the 60 pieces to blend her hair. She has a great length in the back, as you can see in the picture, however on the sides of her head it is much thinner. Kristin explained how she has always wanted long hair, but it just refused to grow past her shoulders cause she flat irons it too much & it kills it.

I explained the process to Kristin of the application & how the extensions tend to be dry to excessive flat ironing isn't necessary or recommended. She agreed to the process & ordered 80 pieces that day!

LOVE!!
They came out so pretty! If you can see, in this photo we did a rotation of a darker brown & a lighter brown. This breaks up her solid color & really adds shine! I then trimmed the ends of her hair to make a ' U " shape in the back. So pretty!!!

This is a client of one of my stylist in the salon. She had inquired about hair extensions because her hair is on the thinner side. She's a great candidate for extensions cause her hair is past her shoulders. The only issue I can see here is, her hair is all one length causing her to have to buy more hair to use to blend her very blunt baseline.

Her goal is to just add some length so she can curl the ends without loosing length.

Her stylist Carly, installed 80 pieces of extensions to blend out the clients solid base line. She chose three different colors & used her artistic eye of placement. The blending technique she did with the extensions colors, left the client with a beautiful high light low light that looked so natural you can't tell she's wearing extensions.

Ombre Balayage Hair Extensions in Rhode Island

Can I do an Ombre with hair extensions?

Can I do a Balayage with hair extensions?

Ombre Balayage Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions In Rhode Island

Ombre Balayage Hair Extensions By Jaclynn Kate

I've got a really cool before & after I am super proud of & want to share with
my readers. Last Friday I got a call at the salon from this girl asking to get
150 pieces of extensions done asap. My first thought was, 'how does she
know she needs 150 pieces & do I even have time to do them?' So I asked
one of my salon employees to have her come in asap for a consultation.
About an hour later the girl shows up with her friend. She begins to tell me
she's from DC & just really wants to get her hair done before Tuesday when
 she goes back home.
I'm like okay, well I am booked solid for the rest of Friday night & I only
have time Saturday at 630pm. What are we doing with your hair? Let's
take it down & have a look & figure out our game plan.

Wow. Okay, the history of what your seeing here is, she wanted to
change her look so she boxed dyed her hair BLACK- oh em gee. Black
box dye is a head ache for any stylist. It's SO hard to get out & can cause
a lot of damage trying to get it out. The thing is box dye is just that - dye.
Think of it as a tar like substance on your hair & how hard tar would be to
get out. Not very easy. Moving on....

After the box dye she had an under color put in and wanted it to be blonde.
She got a blorange color. That's why at the bottom is 'blonde - ish'.

Then she went back to a hair dresser & had red chunky highlights put in on the top.

Alright game plan is to strip out as much of this color as we possibly can without damaging her hair & giving her a chemical hair cut.

I started first with the back two quadrant's of the hair applying Keratin Complex bleach & 40vol to the mid strands to end & then went at the root with 30 vol. I did this because her root is one inch of new growth & will lift much quicker then the hair with box dye on it. Then after washing out the back two quadrant's I did the same application to the front two quadrants. Which game me ORANGE FLAMING HAIR .. lol that's okay right where I need it to be.

She says she wants her hair a light brown all over with 150 pieces
of extensions to make it look like it Ombres into a lighter blonde at
the bottom. Her hair is naturally a very dark brown and can not lift
it to a blonde without it looking orange. Which I totally understand.
When lifting hair that's that dark naturally, the hair stylist is fighting
some intense under tones- in her case a bright orange! In consultation
we can to determine she would only need 100 pieces of extensions to
get the look she wants. Her hair is just past her shoulders so the 18inch extensions will blend just fine & the 100 pieces of extensions will give her the
definition & thickness she wants to see.

Don't spend an extra $500.00 when you don't have to!!

.
Now that the black is out, I can dry the hair, mix up two different colors, apply the colors, wait till they process, then wash out the color, do a hair cut, dry the hair & then FINALLY apply the 100 pieces of extensions, 4 1/2 hours later heres our new Sarah --->

We actually didn't have to cut much off of her hair either! I was in total shock of that. Just another reason why I love Keratin decolor. Sarah found us on Yelp & I am so happy she did! This may have taken for ever for me to complete, but they didn't make Rome in a day either!! =]

Hair Extensions For Your Wedding Day By Jaclynn Kate

Should I Get Hair Extensions For My Wedding..?

Should I Get Hair Extensions For My Wedding..?

Hair Extensions For Your Wedding Day

Bridal Hair & Makeup Trials In Rhode Island

Updos and Extensions

Hair Extensions For Your Wedding Day By Jaclynn Kate

Over the past couple of years I've been asked by my brides "Should I get hair extensions for my wedding''? My answer... 'What are you trying to accomplish'?

Here's what I feel, if you have thoughts of doing a very intricate updo and your hair only reaches your shoulders, my answer would be yes.

If your hair is going in a bun & its medium length, I'd say let's try the style first to see if we can accomplish it without the extra cost.

If your hair is on the thinner side & you want a half up half down look, I'd say let's do it. See it's all dependent on what look YOU want to see on your wedding day.

If you want your hair all down and want it thicker, do it. You wont regret it for a second.

Now here's another question, 'what kind'? My first questions after being asked what kind of extensions to get is, 'well how long do you want to keep them for? Are you looking for just a one time wear? Do you want to keep these extensions and continuously use them? Or are you looking for a semi permanent fix with hair extensions'?

If you're looking to just use them once just to enhance your updo- go with a high quality clip in Remy extension. This way, morning of your wedding, your hair stylist can clip them in where they need to & at the end of the night you can pop them out! (If you haven't had too much to drink =] )
Clip-ins will also work wonders for half up half down looks, as long as the stylist hides the clips!

Another option if your not too keen on the clip ins would be tape extensions. If you think your hair is fine or thin, ask your stylist for tape extensions. They are literally taped to very small sections of hair. They last six to eight weeks before you'll need them removed and moved further up the hair shaft. They're reusable two or three times and they're pretty easy to hide in an updo.

Now if you are looking for hair extensions to wear longer then just the wedding day, I say go with a more semi permanent version that you can continue to wear on your honey moon! Hair Treats are bonded by a bead & do no damage & can be hidden SO easy with any style! I personally wear these extensions & would NEVER recommend a brand I don't love myself.

Many of my clients use these extensions & they LOVE them!!
Meet my 2015 bride Colby! Colby is pretty awesome & we had a great time when she came into the salon. When she first contacted me she voiced her concerns about how thin her hair was & said she was thinking about hair extensions. I asked what she wanted for an updo & she said all up in curls. After our brief discussion I asked her to come in for a complimentary consultation & she did. After our consult I examined her hair and determined she was a great candidate for Hair Treats Extensions. We ordered 60 pieces to match the color above & I said I would put them in the same day she came back for her bridal hair & makeup trial.

I can't even explain how happy & in love she was with the total look!

Clearly she loves them & they worked out great to give her the curly woven updo she wanted! Her wedding isn't until the end of 2015, so our plan is for her to wear these till June & then change the extensions for a new set.

Hair Extensions, Are They Too Dry?

Hair Extensions, Are They Too Dry?

How come by Extensions feel dry?

Can I even use Heat on my Extensions?

Are Hair Extensions Too Dry By Jaclynn Kate

Upon consultation with your hair stylist in the salon, how to properly care for hair extensions should be part of the initial experience of having hair extensions installed and discussed in depth with your stylist. Everyone that habitually wears hair extensions knows that the key to keeping them looking natural and feeling silky soft is minimizing heat and mechanical stress in addition to increasing moisture content using hair treatment products. Knowing how to care for hair extensions does require as much attention as selecting and installing the right kind of human hair and hair extension attachment method. To get the best value out of the initial investment the clients must take care of their scalp, their own hair and the hair extensions and not with substandard products. Often people select their hair treatment products based on scent, cost and brand name leaving it a guessing game if the products actually do any good.

Moisture is the most important element when understanding how to care for hair extensions!

Upon installing hair extensions on my clients I go over the aftercare with them thoroughly. They are high maintenance, they need A LOT of moisture and Hair Treats recommends you use their brand of shampoo & conditioner to replenish the hair. Wondering, how do I take care of my hair extensions , is never a fun thought, cause you can ruin your investment in just a few hair washes! When selecting a shampoo, most products that are formulated for dry hair are great products don't get me wrong. However, they have not taken into consideration that your hair extensions have come into this equation and need EXTRA moisture.

Unlike many conditioning treatments, Hair Treats Moist Maintain is water-based and will not adversely affect or alter any chemical treatments. Its unique formulation gives it an initially alkaline pH, thus allowing opening of the cuticles and penetrating deep into the cortex. While the hair is drying, the formula neutralizes itself back to its natural pH level. The now more acidic composition closes the cuticle, locking-in emollients. This ultimately tackles the biggest concerns with hair extension such as; tangles, dryness and lack of shine. The added benefits of humectants and lubricants help hair extensions retain their moisture, resulting in soft healthy hair to the touch, and incredible shine to the eye.

   •   Moisturizing shampoo cleanses the hair without harsh detergents.
   •   Exclusive blend of conditioners (Aloe Vera Gel and Royal Jelly) for strength, elasticity and color retention
   •   Helps to restore the natural pH of hair
   •   Perfect for maintaining hair extensions.

THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE HEALTH OF YOUR EXTENSIONS & PROLONGING THE LIFELINE!!

Meet my client Alicia. These extensions in this picture are 10 months old!
(I did NOT do her color)
While Ideally these extensions last 6-8 months regularly, Alicia has manage to follow every instruction I have given her & made her investment last ten full months!!

What they looked like when I took them out.

This is Alicia's hair after taking them out. No damage done & she was very surprised at how much her hair had grown over the coarse of ten months. Now for me to fix that color!!

She wanted to get ride of the black she had on top & make her hair a nice brown before adding the extensions. In addition to the brown extensions, she wanted to add some highlights underneath just to break up the color. She is not a fan of light colors on the top of her head.
Her ending result was nothing but beautiful! And she let me keep them longer this time!!!

She is a great client who can follow the directions given to ensure her extensions are always being moisturized! She will even sleep with leave-in conditioner in over night!! Prop's to you girl you know how to stretch that buck!!
